Maaveeran – Movie review

Sathya (Sivakarthikeyan) comes from poverty-stricken background, living on the banks of the coovam river with his mother (Saritha) & sister (Monisha Blessy) . His only solace in life is creating a comic story strip for the local newspaper of his fictional character Maaveeran. That too lasts only till he draws since the credit goes to the crooked newspaper artist who uses him. Sathya manages to live turning a blind eye for all the corrupt things which happens in his life, but uses the same as content in his comic strip. As Sathya battles everyday life, more trouble lands as his slum is deliberately relocated to a poorly constructed 10 storey building by minister Jeyakodi MN (Mysskin). Things get worse when things in the apartment start falling apart, literally.  As he gets pushed to corner from all sides n his life, Sathya takes a drastic decision which turns his world upside down, how this changes his world and how does Satya save the slums dwellers is the rest of the story.

Madonne Ashwin made it to top list of directors from Madela which created waves in OTT release, when others were struggling in that Stream. So, there were high expectations when he was paired with Sivakarthikeyan. Maaveeran Takes time to settle and the director still keeps us engaged with his script and Yogi babu along with Siva makes it a smooth first half. The key idea which forms the story line might have very hard to write in the script but to an extent was executed well. Music was a big miss in the film in the songs as well as BGM. Adithi Shankar also had very little screen space to add anything. Actor Sunil was totally wasted in the film. Mysskin was good in his role and true to his character in the film. The second half becomes very predictable till the end but finishes simple with a lot of unanswered questions. Maaveeran gets 6/10

Maamannan – Movie review

Directed by Maari Selvaraj, who is known for Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan, Maamannan has Vadivelu and Udhaynidhi Stalin playing the lead roles. Vadivelu plays the lead title role, an MLA of the ruling party coming from scheduled caste.  Rathnavel (Fahadh Faasil), is the district secretary of the ruling party, which was previously held by his father. Athiveeran (Udhayanidhi Stalin) doesn’t get along with his father Maamanan from a past incident which changes his life’s ideology.  Rathnavel though runs things from his end, he treats his fellow party members from the oppressed community as equivalent to his house pets and expects only loyalty in return. The actual face -off between Rathnavel and Athiveeran begins when he realises how his father is being treated by Rathnavel. As he lashes out against Rathnavel and starts series of events which brings feud between them. How this ends is the rest of the story.

Maamanan though script wise is not the best one from Maari Selvaraj, still rises from very good performances from Vadivelu and Fahadh Fassil. Vadivelu plays a total contrasting role from all of his previous film and leads the film. Udhaynidi’s plays it decent in his role as well. Keerthy Suresh has very little screen space but manages to perform in the given time. The first half plays it strong and the interval block takes the movie to its height. But the second half succumbs down with weak screenplay and ends up being a propaganda film for Udhaynidhi’s political career. AR Rahman’s music was ok and cinematography was in tune to the subject. I give the film 6/10
