Bell Bottom – Movie review

BELLBOTTOM is an espionage thriller, inspired by a true event of the 1984 hijacking of ICC 691. When ICC 691 in hijacked and this being 5th hijack in 7 years. In the past, the hijackers landed their plane in Lahore, Pakistan, after which the Pakistani authorities negotiated and managed to get a safe release for the passengers. This time, too, the flight moves to Lahore. Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi (Lara Dutta) is all set to negotiate. But this time Raw agency brings in Anshul (Akshay Kumar) is a raw agent analyst who specialises in airplane hijacking. He suggests that this time we retaliate and plan a covert operation and apprehend the terrorist and bring the hostages back safely. But things get more tense when the plan leaves Lahore and lands in Dubai where Raw has no support . How Anshul and his team bring the hostages and bring the terrorists to justice is the rest of the story.

Bell Bottom is made for Akshay kumar and he carries it on his shoulder thorough out the film to success. His screen presence and subtle yet mass scenes is not to be missed. Lara Dutta as Indra Gandhi gives a neat performance. Vani Kapoor has very little screen time but makes it to the best. The second half proves to be a bit lengthier and could have been sharp. Songs dosent make an impact and could have been avoided. But the Dhoom Tarara theme is sure to be ringing in your years even after you come out of the theatre. Bell Bottom gets 6/10

Netrikann Movie Review

Durga (Nayanthara)  a CBI officer who loses her eyesight and her adoptive brother in a car accident, and blames herself for the loss. Over the course of time she learns brail and also tries to live on her own with a help of a guide dog. She even reapplies for a desk job which is denied by her superiors. She gets more frustrated when her donor eyes gets rejected. Parallel to this there is series of young missing in the city and police are bamboozled as they don’t have clue on this case as the perpetrator is very smart. Durga gets involved in the case as the perpetrator tries to kidnap her and gets Durga manages to escape, thus starts a cat and mouse game between both of them and Durga plans to capture the perpetrator at any costs, hoe she manages to do that is the rest of the story.

Netrikann from the beginning belongs to Nayanthaara as it was made for her, and she does a fabulous job in the character. Manikandan who comes in as the rookie cop manages to humor us but in vain, Ajmal starts of good but the weight-age of the character looses towards the end and the script ends very weak. The duration also could have been less with lots of unwanted scenes left unedited. Netrikann gets only 5/10

Navarasa – Anthology Review

Edhiri (Karuna – Compassion), Summer of ’92 (Haasya – Laughter), Project Agni (Adbhutha – Wonder), Payasam (Bibhatsa – Disgust), Peace (Shaantha – Peace), Roudhram (Raudra – Anger), Inmai (Bhayaanaka – Fear), Thunintha Pin (Veera – Valour), Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru (Shringaara – Romance), these are the navarasas preseted as an anthologly by Netflix directed by nine different directors. Around 40 top actors were also roped in for the much awaited series.

The Anthology starts with Edhiri directed by Bejoy Nambiar , though he was given the best cast of the whole series , I would say he has wasted it, the story was so slow that it made the 22 mins as 2hrs, and the background score of PB Sreenivas’s ‘Manithan Enbavan’ rolling continuously becomes irritating by the end. Summer of ’92 directed by Priyadarshan doesn’t make justice to its own Raasa. The third in the series which is one of one I liked is Project Agni by Karthick Naren, though seems like  flashes from Nolan films, this short one was definitely one of best in the series.  Next one one Payasam by Vasanth is also the better ones, led by the veteran actor Delhi Ganesh who single handedly anchors this episode. Peace by Karthick Suburaj too fails as he makes a mess with a script which happens in Eelam’s no man’s land.  Roudhram marks the directorial debut of Arvindswamy as he portrays a simple revenge plot with an unessesry twist in the end. Rathindran Prasad’s Inmai takes us through a bit of horror and keeps us engaged with some neat performances from Siddarth and Parvathy. The weakest of the bunch falls with  Thunintha Pin (Veera – Valour) which ends very abruptly starring Kishore and Atharvaa. The final episode Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru (Shringaara – Romance) of Goutham Vasudevan Menon , the longest of all the episode takes us on a romantic ride of all his films but still leaves us in anguish in the end, but with a good performance by Prayaga Rose Martin. In total two were good , two were acceptable and the rest were disappointing , Navarsa gets 5/10
