Naachiyaar – Movie review

“Naachiyaar” opens with great expectations, starring Jyothika and G.V.Kumar in the lead roles. The story starts with ACP Naachiyaar (Jyothika) who is on her way on a long pending family vacation, is interrupted by a tip which links to long pending case. This takes her to pregnant Arasi(Ivana) a rape victim who has been on the run . At the same time the accused Kaathavaraayan alias Kaathu (GV Prakash) is also apprehended and brought under custody. When Naachiyaar finds out that there was a mutual consent between the them , she makes the case unofficial and takes in the girl under her care since the girl is a minor. But things get complicated when the baby is born and the DNA doesn’t match between the Kaathu and the baby. How Naachiyaar solves this puzzle is the rest of the story.

No matter who comes to Bala he brings the best from them, So welcome to the graduation of GV Prakash as an better actor thru this film. Jyothika too has performed well in role , but in order to bring her more into the character unnecessary scenes were added which made it look artificial onscreen. Great debut by Young Ivana , who was also impressive. With good dominating characters ,story and screen play was not up to the mark and becomes the weak spot of the film. Though the film was just 100 mins, the second half was dragging and was just running around in loops. Will just good performance make Naachiyaar a hit? It gets only 4/10 from me.

Kalakalappu 2 – movie review

The Sequel to Kalalalappu , this story forms in the backdrop of colorful Kasi,  Raghu ( Jai) comes to kasi to claim his ancestral property to rebuild his career. He stays in a huge mansion which is maintained by Seenu( Jiva) which is actually is the property which Raghu has come to claim. Seenu finds out who Raghu is from his friend Aishwarya (Nikki Galrani) who is the tahsildar. Seenu who is ready to hand over the property to Raghu is stalled due to his sister’s marriage and his burdened with debt. Apart from having ownership of the same property both of them are swindled of money from Ganesh ( Siva) . when the ownership is resolved, Ganesh again comes into their lives to cause more trouble. How the catch Ganesh and get their money back is the rest of the story.

Comedy of errors forms the genre whole film, which has been flooded with a huge cast of comedians. Sundar C follows the same pattern of the previous film, but this one fails as it doesn’t have simple narrative.  Instead it has too small sub stories with a enormous cast, which just confuses the flow. Jiva and Jai fail miserably it comedy, but Siva in the second saves the day partially. Catherine Teresa and Nikki Galrani barely act, but they are used just as glamour dolls. With overflow of characters and too many loops Kalalalppu 2 does bring laughter but no logic and story. it gets 3/10

Savarakathi – Movie review

Pichai (Ram) a fabler by nature and a barber by profession is forced to accompany his deaf wife Subadra (Poorna)to her brother’s marriage who has eloped with his rich girlfriend. On the way he gets into Squabble with an enraged Don Manga (Mysskin) who is spending is last day of parole in the city. Manga who is already annoyed with fact that he has to spend the next 3 years in Jail, gets his ego tested when a low life like Pichai challenges him. Thus starts race against time and wits between the two as Manga vows to take out Pichai head by sundown.

Though this could have been made as a commercial thriller, the director brings in a two unlikely characters and make this film an enjoyable dark comedy. All three lead actors Ram, Myskkin and Poorna are extremely good; though at times look over exaggerated. Rest of the cast support well and add flavor throughout. Dialogues are very striking and hard hitting. First half just rushes through, second half’s pace is much slower but keeps you engaged. Duration of the second half could have been reduced and kept the film to 90min duration.  The film might not be enjoyed by all , but has its moments which touches every one. I give it 7/10

Padman – Movie review

Padman based on the true life of Arunachalam Muruganatham , director Balki wastes no time as he takes the audience into story of Lakshmikant Chauhan (Akshay Kumar) and his newly wed wife Gayathri (Radhika Apte). His pleasant life is disturbed when he tries to change his wife’s habit of using a cloth instead of a sanitary pad during her mensuration period. Gayathri refuses to use pads as it’s costly but more than that she is embarrassed as why her husband is showing interest on this matter. But Lakshmi goes a step further by making his own version of the pad, so that cost doesn’t come into the way of hygiene. Slowly this obsession of pads makes Lakshmi a look like a pervert in his own village, but Lakshmi is determination to make a low cost sanitary pad doesn’t stop. When an experiment of his fails miserably and he is publicly humiliated, the whole village turns against him and his wife too abandons him. What happens to Lakshmi Kant’s mission thereafter forms the rest of the story.

PadMan breaks the menstrual taboo which still remains as a shameful curse in our country in which just around 20% of women use sanitary pads. Director Balki forms a very good narrative which is strengthens the story and delivers the message straight forward. Akshay’s portrayal of the lead character is phenomenal and takes him to a great height. If its Radhika Apte in the first half, Sonam kapoor in latter half which shows two distinct characters who stands side by side in support of the lead actor and the story. Th romance inbetween might just be the out of sync portion in the whole film , but that doesn’t hinder with the main story or its cause. All technical departments set the whole mood and takes us into a period where you just forget what year this whole event happens in the film. Legendary PC Sreeram’s cinematography forms an integral part of the story in communicating the film to the audience. The film gets 7/10
