Karnan – movie review

After a powerful Pariyerum Perumal, Maari Selvaraj comes back with a yet another powerful drama on an expolited community with Dhanush as the lead. Film starts with a young girl struggling for her life on the main highway road with vehicles passing by without stopping to help her. Thus starts the story of Podiyunkullam a small village which consists of a minor community. The village is made to depend on the higher community for their basic necessities , so controlled as they have been refused a bus stop. Their kids are denied schooling and men don’t get access to jobs by this. Karnan (Dhanush) often gets into trouble fighting for their rights, but the villagers elders and his family hold him down. But one day emotions take over and Karnan and his friends end up destroying a local bus, this triggers a serious of events which decides the fate of the Village.Though we have seen lot of films with the same storyline, Maari Selvaraj ‘s unique story telling which makes the difference. The whole cast stands out in unity for the success of the film. Lal plays a important role and delivers a fantastic performance, Dhanush is made the role but, there were moments of commercial essence in his acting which could have avoided. New face Rajisha Vijayan makes a good debut, and Lakshmi Priya who acts as Dhanush’s sister performs well. The only downside is a slow first half but it builds character to the film , and second half picks up the pace to complete the story. I give 8/10

Irul – Movie review

Alex (Soubin Shahir) a novelist who has just completed his 1st novel , is desperate to take a break. His girlfriend Archana (Darshana Rajendran) a lawyer agrees to accompany him on a weekend getaway to a remote place without phones and any communication. On their way to the getaway their car breaks down. With a heavy down pour they take Shelter in a nearby house occupied by a lone resident (Fahadh Faasil) .As the three engage in conversation  on Alex’s novel ,it starts a game of cat and mouse between the three and leads into a never ending rabbit hole of delusions.

The success of the story is the cast which brilliantly mesmerize us in this mystery drama. All three have performed well. Story builds rapidly and the audience is led through a game of whodunit which is revealed ultimately in the end. the only drawback is the climax which ends the engaging mystery very subtly other than that , technically the cinematography, the art direction and music all collectively package this mystery drama to perfection, I give it 7/10

Sultan – Movie review

Sethupathi (Napolean) is a ruthless head of big gangster group. His son Sultan (karthi) though grown among the gangster group, stands outside of all this violence and blood. When the new  Sultan comes from abroad to spend some time with his father, a brutal encounter leaves Sethupathi wounded, seeing this Sultan decides to leave this blood drenched group. But Sethupathi dies the next day leaving behind the whole gang in charge of Sultan. The death of Sethupathi aggravates the new Chief of Police to encounter the whole gang and make the city clean. But Sultan asks the chief for a last chance to cleanse the group. How Sultan survives this ordeal is the rest of the story.

Though the story is not old to the entertainment industry, Bakkiyaraj Kannan tries to add new flavour here and there with good sentiments and action sequences to keep the story moving. Karthi does a decent job and Rashmika manages to a few scenes to her side. Lal plays a pivotal role and stands out in the cast. But a slow and predictable second half makes the film dull and tasteless till the end. Satya’s cinematography holds the film’s integrity till the end. Songs also are dull and not as catchy. I give the film 4/10
