Aval – Movie review

Dr Krishna (Siddharth), a successful brain surgeon and his beautiful wife Lakshmi (Andrea Jeremiah), live peacefully in their beautiful house under the foot hills of the Himalayas. Their peaceful life is disrupted by a family which moves in as their neighbors. A series of paranormal events occur in their neighbor’s house involving their teenage daughter Jennifer (Anisha Angelina Victor ) which also affects the new couple’s life. Krishna takes it as his commitment to save Jennifer and to know what truly is creating these incidents. How both the families fight against this evil and get out of this is the rest of the story.

Aval gives a taste of true horror with the normal gory and blood spurting horror which tamil cinema is used. It has its scary moments which leave the audience frightened. For Siddarth and Andrea their roles are easy and they just perform easy and their chemistry is good. Anisha who acts as Jennifer has the tough role and performs well. Rest of cast okay and give a decent performance. Music and sound effects adds value and supports the movie genre. The movie has its low points in the second half as it slows down and story behind the paranormal events is a big letdown. Vfx and makeup was not creative and authentic. Still Aval is horror flick which you don’t want to miss. I give it 5/10

Bongu – Movie review

Deva (Natarajan Subramaniam), Janani (Ruhi Singh) and Bhaskar (Arjunan) are three friends with high profile jobs in a luxury car manufacturer. During a delivery of a car they get attacked by a car hijackers and loose an expensive car bought by a politician. They get blamed and put into jail, worse they lose their jobs and get blacklisted. After their jail term, unable to get jobs they get hired by a local gang to steal cars for them. Upon one of their heist they come across Madurai based Don Pandian (Sharath Lohitashwa) who is crazy over foreign cars. Incidentally Pandian was the one who stole the luxury car from them and the reason behind their current status as thieves.  Deva and gang plan to swindle Pandian of all his wealth and his treasury of cars. How they achieve this is the rest of the story.

Bongu starts like Natty’s previous hit Sathuranga vettai, but fails miserably as it proceeds. Amateur in acting and all technical categories make this movie unwatchable. Bongu lives up to its name and scams the audiences. I give it 1/10

Raees – Movie review

raees-poster

Raees a story set in the late 1980’s in the liquor prohibited state of Gujarat. Raees who lives with his mother in Fathepur lives among community which manufactures hooch and banded liquor.  Raees and his close friend Sadiq join the liquor trade business under Jairaj Seth (Atul Kulkarni) who trades branded liquor. Under Jairaj, Raees learns his trade and thinks of starting his own business. With initial hiccups Raees slowly rises in the business and grows huge , which brings him into the radar of Jaideep Majumdar (Nawazuddin Siddique) an incorruptible cop who makes it point to bring down Raees’s empire. What happens next is the rest of the story.

Raees starts of well and with Shar rukh khan’s screen presence and performance the film is elevated high, but the plot is very predictable and filled with very few scenes with interest to the audience. Nawazuddin Siddique has his own screen space which highlights the film and keeps us engaged.  Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub as Sadiq and Mahira Khan as Raees’s wife Mohsina give a decent performance. Song are well made, but placed randomly creating a slight turbulence. Credit should be given to the production design as the era beautifully was created, which enhanced the story. Raees though moves sluggishly in the second half, would still bring glory. I give it 5/10

Jazbaa – Movie Review

Jazbaa

Anuradha Verma (Aishwarya Rai)a leading criminal lawyer, who doesn’t take no for an answer and commands the court room . But her life is changed when her daughter is kidnapped and she is forced to defend a rapist . How she manages to win the case and save her daughter is the rest of the story.

Those who were eager to see Aishwarya back in the movies, this one is all Aishwarya, but in a predictable story with a zero screenplay. The cast of Irfan Khan, Jackie Shroff and Shabana Azmi all makes the acting fine but with a weak story it ends dull. The first half is much better than the the dull second half. The technical team is weak, the cinematography and music is wayward and not help the film in any way. The dialogues look like it wasn’t given any thought. Altogether it doesn’t impress at any level. I give it 3/10
