Puli is a fantasy story of good versus evil which happens in early India rule by kings and queens. These lands are invaded by an evil clan called Vethaalam who have super human strength .this ferocious clan is ruled by a queen Yamanadevi ( Sridevi) , but she is under a spell and controlled by her general Jalatharangam ( Sudeep ). Marutheeran (Vijay) is an orphan who is brought up by Vembunathan (Prabhu) headman of Vairanaloor which is under Vethaalam’s control. The evil clan always tortures the villagers and collect taxes. On one such event they things get out of hand and Vembunathan is killed and Marutheeran’s lover Pavalavalli ( Shruthi )is kidnapped . How Marutheeran takes revenge and brings back Pavalavalli is the rest of the story.
Chimbu devan’s always attempts fantasy than realism in his films, and had a decent success in them too. Puli favours to much fantasy and losses track in the story line. Vijay does justice to his role , but fantasy is not his genre . Shruthi and Hansika adorn just the glamour roles, they don’t disturb the storyline much. Sudeep and Sridevi are wasted in the film. Don’t expect much from them as they share very less screen space. Vfx is seamless in most of the places but lacks realism . Film is slow most of the time and songs doesn’t help in film’s momentum. This puli ends up being a playful kitten. I give it 4/10
