“Special 26 ” Movie Review

Based on a series of real incidents from the 1980s, “Special 26 “tells the story of a group of conmen who rob politicians and businessmen of vast sums of money by masquerading as CBI or Income Tax officials.

The framing of the Indian cities of the ’80s  from Lutyen’s Delhi, Calcutta’s BurraBazaar, Bombay’s Opera House where all well composed by the cinematographer. The film crew chose the right locations for the outdoor shots, spent time detailing the roads with Ambassador Cars, Lambretta scooters, Maruti 800 cars and the costumes throughout the film kept the mood of that period. Although they could have avoided some of the blue screen shots which where amateurly put together by the post production team .

Akshay Kumar in a no-nonsense role share’s the same amount or less screen time with Manoj Bhajpay. Anupam Kher amazes everyone by his range of expressions donned for his character. Songs proved to be a major distraction in the film. The background score supports the period in which the story is told. The love story between Akshay Kumar and Kajal Agarwal brings down the pace of the film and could have been totally avoided – maybe Indian cinema stills needs a heroine beside the hero for a happily ever after sequence.

But the story is so well told. The pace never drops and keeps the audience engaged. One of the best told heist films in Indian cinema. I give it 7/10
